Special Projects

January 11 - 13, 2008

Mike and I each had things we wanted to accomplish this weekend.

My first goal was touching up the living room paint.

I like my two-tone paint scheme in the living room, but I was never crazy about
how the upper color looked against the yellow of the kitchen. The darker brown is
a much nicer contrast, so I had to make some modifications before wallpapering.

To quote Mike, "The girls are on the back porch surveying their domain."
Really, they were waiting for a visitor.

The unfamiliar Golden Retriever in the picture with C is Buddy Price.
He is a neighbor that comes to visit with the girls frequently.

Mike had to do some work in the attic. Not glamourous, but necessary.
He insulated some of the heating ducts and installed insulation barriers.
The insulation barriers are to keep the blow-in insulation from creeping
over into the unfinished spaces (after we get it blown in, of course).

The next project for me was decorating the kitchen table.
I am having fun with the somewhat offbeat decor of this place.
Cutting this book apart took me into Saturday evening.

Here I am on Sunday morning cooking breakfast.

After breakfast, I resumed work on my table project. I used
the really cool illustrations from the bird book (which I bought
really cheap) and used decoupage to affix them to the kitchen table.
In the future, as we sit there watching birds and see an unfamiliar
one, we just have to move our plates to see what it is. Another of my
funky/fun design elements for our little "cabin" in the woods.

Another visitor! That's Buddy's Mom, Jean. She's a
year-round resident. She lives with her husband, Jim,
and Buddy over the back hill from our house. We take
turns visiting. It is nice having friends close by.

I wasn't allowed to take pictures of Mike in the act of completing his
next project. He spent most of the day on Sunday scrubbing the floors. This
was necessary to remove all the drywall mud and paint splatters. We will be
able to re-seal the floor soon, which will make it look even better. This
is what the acid-stained floor is supposed to look like when clean.

It will be shinier once we get it re-sealed.

A close-up of the table as it cures. The haze is the still-wet decoupage stuff.

After I finished the first coat on the table, it was on to do some
wallpapering. We FINALLY got to tie the two-tone paint scheme together.

Mike and I, working together, got it done pretty quickly.
He took lots of pictures of me working, and now it looks like
he didn't do any work. I could not have done it without him.

I used the sponge to get the bubbles out and wipe the excess paste off the wall.

Here's a close-up of the pattern.

Mike did all of the cutting.

Here I am applying the final coat of decoupage.
I'll have to add sealer on the next visit.

Here's Mike eating dinner at the "new" table.

The decoupage stuff dries clear and creates a flat sheen.

The finished product.

I can't believe neither of us thought to take a whole-room picture
of the living area to show off the new wallpaper. We are both very
pleased with the result. Oh well, there's always next time.
