The Kirkpatrick's D.I.Y. Project for 2005
Shingle Installation - Part II
November 11 - 13, 2005
Finally, the weather gave us a break. We drove out on Saturday in our new truck
to discover a beautiful, sunny autumn day. A beautiful day for shingling.
This is CeCe, who hates having her picture taken.
I tried to get both dogs looking out but they wouldn't cooperate.
This is what she thinks of me taking her picture.
Meg enjoys the ride much more than CeCe.
Notice they are wearing their traveling outfits?
CeCe can't resist hanging her head out the window every now and then.
We started working soon after our arrival. Mike
is cutting a hole in the roof for the sewage vent.
Once the hole was finished, up on the roof we went.
A close-up of the air nailer and nail strips.
The shingling is hard work! It was my job to slide
the shingles to Mike who then nailed them into place.
While Mike went to get something, I took a moment to
stretch my back. Mike called it "doing a Snoopy."
We worked as late as we could, but dusk comes
early this time of year. That white spot on the
upper left is the moon! I took this as soon as
we got off the roof after finishing for the day.
It was nice, when morning came, to see
how much we had accomplished.
We started work right after breakfast. We would have started
sooner, but we had to wait for the sun to burn off the dew.
That yellow rope is our safety line. It's a steep roof.
We took a break around 2:00. I took a walk to stretch my
legs and give my back a chance to be straight for a while.
The house from the property line through the bare trees.
The newly graded Turkey Hollow Road.
The view over our property from atop the
hill shown in the previous picture.
The road as it approaches our driveway.
A view of the house from the break area. As you
can see, we didn't have much more to do on that side.
We finished!
Well... for the day anyway.
The dogs were happy to see us come down off the roof.
Mike installs the vent.
It finally looks like a real roof.
The view from the back of our property.
Our house sits atop a ridge.
Some of the last color of the year...
We hope to finish shingling next weekend. Just in time for Thanksgiving!
