Bed & Kitchen

August 17 - 19, 2007

We are REALLY making obvious progress!

Before we go too far, I have to admit two things:

1. We hired a contractor to install the big HVAC stuff

2. We forgot to take pictures of the HVAC stuff!

This is the condensing unit that was installed on August 10.
It sits behind the house not too far from the porch.

Here's the air handling unit. One of the reasons we hired someone was
that we knew getting the thing into the rafters with just Mike and me
would have been a real bear. So we took the easy, but costly, route.

The air handling unit from another angle.

A nice view of the melted siding. A contractor faux pas.
Luckily we have plenty of extra siding to fix it.

These cedar paneling planks are my latest creative project.

I applied the stain at the Maryland house on Friday.
In this photo, I am adding the polyurethane sealer.

While I was working in the garage, Mike was
anchoring the kitchen base cabinets in place.

He clamped them together before screwing them into place.

More screws.

Fitting the cement board into place. Cement
board is needed to support the concrete counters.

Making the final cuts.

The planks and trim molding are stained, sealed and ready to install.

But first we had to hang some wall cabinets.

I told you we were making progress!

I did help a little bit.

The view from just inside the front door.

This is what it looks like from the kitchen table.

When we were done there, it was back to drywall finishing.

Not my favorite task, but it is a necessary evil.

Sunday we got to install those cedar planks,
which will serve as the headboard for our bed.

First, we installed furring strips as support for the planks.

This is why I didn't paint the wall in this spot.

Next, Mike cut the planks. They are actually used
for paneling and are sold in 8-foot lengths.

Then I arranged them in the order to be installed.

And we installed them. Mike did most of the work, of
course. I think the stuff up, he implements it for me.
I bet you wish you had a Mike!

NOTE: Never use this stuff as paneling. Installation was a bugger.

All of the planks in place.

Now Mike applies the trim molding.

And it is all done!

The finished product.

It looks right nice, if I do say so myself.

Back to drywall finishing. The inside corners where the
walls and ceiling meet are the absolute worst to do.

Mike working hard taping the last seam in the main house.
That's a big deal. We may actually be able to finish priming
the main house next weekend. Then we can paint.

Mike's last task of the day was painting the doors.
To do the other side, he shut himself in the bedroom.

C was looking for him.
Notice the white nose?

I am not exactly sure what we're doing next weekend.
But I am sure I'll have more cool pictures to share.
