Playing Catchup

July 30, 2008

I am REALLY behind on my updates. Sorry.
Now that we're nearing the end, and just doing a bunch of small
stuff, it isn't very exciting. Actually, it has been quite relaxing.

So, wanna know what's happened since my last post?

Aside from the FABULOUS trip to Alaska , that is?
Hopefully, I'll be able to remember!

Mike made an awesome bunk bed for the grandkids' room.
He's so cool. All I have to say is something like, "Honey,
will you make a bunk bed for me?" And he does it! Sort of.

What I really said was, "Honey, can you believe the bunk bed
I want to buy, even in the CHEAPIE stores, is like $500?"

I spent about 8 hours sewing the rug you see me sitting on.
It is a hand-braided rug that my great-grandmother made for
my parents as a wedding gift in 1959. It is almost 50!

Mike installed the window thingies for the alarm system, too.

Same thing, different angle.

I'm still sewing the rug.

Meg is bored, can you tell?

Dead snake at our Maryland house. There's a story behind this one.
To keep the story short, I saw this on Wednesday in my flower bed.
I was almost positive it was a copperhead, which are venomous, so
I made Mike kill it. After an Internet search and closer look at the
markings, we realized it was a harmless hognose snake.

I felt really bad. I'm really not afraid of snakes, but I thought
for sure it was a copperhead. The round pupils is one of the telltale
signs that it is not a copperhead. Sorry for the gore...

Mike also installed a doggie door. Finally!

Can dogs say, "WTF"? I think they can. This look clearly says it.

Now they just have to figure out how to use the thing. And remember it is there.

Here's one coming in! I'm not sure which one.

Here I am cleaning the rug after spending
an entire day, practically, sewing the thing.

As an aside... when I finished sewing it, I sprinkled baking soda all over it.
Hoping to get rid of the musty smell. Afterwards, Mike and I went into town
for dinner. While we were gone, we had a thunderstorm. CeCe, my little princess,
hates thunder AND has irritable bowel syndrome (when ya gotta go, ya gotta go).
If she's alone during a storm, more often than not, it scares the crap out of
her. Literally. You guessed it, she left a huge puddle of diarrhea on the rug.
That just made it harder to get the thing clean.

The bunk bed.

Same bed, different angle. Isn't it awesome?
I tell you, Mike rocks. Note the storage drawer
underneath, too. I didn't even ask for that.

A close-up of the alarm thing on the front window.

Cute sign, eh? This picture is really to show
another alarm thing. A motion detector.

A window contact (and dirty windowsill).

Another shot of the window contact and more wires.

This is the thermostat. The thing sticking out of it
is the temperature sensor for the alarm system. If it
gets too cold, the system will call to let us know.

The garage door contact.

We had a pretty wet spring and early-summer. C is one wet dog.

Meg is pretty wet, too. But she could care less.
She is our outdoorsy girl.

Another view of the bunk bed, this time
with the second drawer underneath, too.

Another angle. See the handles on the drawers?

WARNING! MORE GORY SNAKE STUFF AHEAD

So, three days after we kill what is NOT a copperhead in MD,
I see a copperhead at the WV place. Weird, eh? This is a copperhead
for sure. See the slitted pupils and copper-colored head? Had he
been lounging anywhere other than directly in front of the doggie
door, we might have left him alone. Wrong place, wrong time for him.

It is actually sort of cool-looking, don't you think?

It was just over two feet long.

The snakeskin, which the snake had just shed. It was still moist.

One big (well, small), empty living room. At least the floor is clean!

Look! Furniture!

Now, if only I could decide how it should be arranged.

We're up to July 18-20. Almost caught up!

Mike went up alone for the weekend. Even then, he is industrious.
This picture shows him test-fitting the picket fence headboard.

And here he's giving the 50-year-old rug a good airing-out.

These little blocks of wood are going to be our nightstands.

The wind machine is helping the paint to dry.

I told Mike I wanted a picket-fence headboard, and this is what I got.

I wasn't even there to supervise, and look how nice it looks.

It looks nice against that wall color. At least I think it does.

And here's my nightstand. They're mounted like shelves so we
have room on the floor for the dog beds. One dog on each side.

And here's Mike's. We're both readers. A place to put our books is a must.

Now, Mike thinks I didn't notice that when he staged this photo
there's a map of Alaska on my nightstand and the book, Looking for
Alaska
by Peter Jenkins, which he just finished, on his.

Not sure where his book went, but the map is still on my nightstand.
You can see how nice our bedroom looks now. And how well the doggie bed fits.

The ladder, unfinished, Mike made for the grandkids' bunk bed.

That's it! I am finished. I can't believe I made it to the end.
I'll try to post more regularly, but there's just not a lot to talk
about. We really are almost finished. And very happy about it, too.

This weekend, we actually get to PLAY. I'll try to take lots of pictures!
