More Finishing Touches

May 10 - 12, 2008

Just some more odds and ends being done. I can't say "small stuff"
because that implies not much effort. But Mike actually did put a
lot of effort into his primary project for the weekend, which was
assembling the bunk bed he made for the grandkids' room.

Making some final cuts.

Some of the pieces ready for assembly.

The unfinished dresser I bought at my favorite Amish
furniture store in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

I stained the top of it brown last week.

We had to return the trailer to WV, so we loaded it up with new mattresses,
rocking chairs, lounge chairs we bought for the back porch, and the bunk bed
pieces. All that stuff and there was plenty of room left in the trailer.

Here I am on the new rocker. I am working on making some tables so we can
get rid of the bucket that has served as our table pretty much since we
had a front porch. It is sort of ugly, but it worked pretty well.

Mike on one of the rockers.

No one on the rockers.

Mike doing some bunk bed work on his new Frame-X tool,
a cool portable, convertible work bench he got recently.

Here I am applying some green stain.

Bunk bed components in the bedroom.

Assembly has begun.

Once he reached a stopping point (he needed washers),
he applied sealer to the garage cabinets.

The dresser before sealer is applied.

A cool lizard I found during my morning walk. It is a juvenile red-spotted newt.
I couldn't just tell Mike about it, that would be boring. So I caught it and
brought it home with me. Usually, that would have been hard because lizards are
notoriously fast. But at 7:00 AM on this rainy May morning, it was 40 degrees! The
poor little thing was almost frozen. He was much livelier after a few hours indoors.

IMPORTANT CORRECTION: "Salamanders are amphibians, lizards are reptiles. This
means that salamanders are closely related to frogs and toads and lizards are related
to snakes, turtles, crocodiles and such." -- Thanks, Mike, for setting us straight!

After more rain, the South Branch of the Potomac was just about ready to flood.

I am curious to see if this trailer is still there this coming weekend.

Bunk bed assembly resumes.

Looking good, isn't it?

Mike is awesome. He can make anything with wood!

Just to prove Mike can make all kinds of stuff, here's a shot of the king-sized bed
he made for our MD house. This was years ago, before we started the WV Project and
he actually had spare time. He has made nightstands since then, but we don't have
dressers yet because all of our spare time has been, spent in West Virginia!

NOTE: We no longer have the Southwest theme in our bedroom. The walls were
not pink, but salmon-colored. Know anyone that needs a used steer skull?

Here's Mike staining the bed...

...and me staining the dresser. Still.

I honestly never knew you could buy stain in colors
other than the various shades of brown. That's opens
up a whole new window of possibilities for me. I like
color (in case you haven't already noticed).

Kitchen decor. Know how to tell we are almost done?
Just keep watching the walls fill up over the next few
weeks or months. I have all sorts of stuff to hang.

Look how nice the green dresser looks in the bedroom.
Notice my cool new lampshades and the bear I finally
was able to retrieve from his closet hibernation.

It is the end of the day on Monday. Naptime for the girls...

...and my wonderful hubby.
I actually got to finish reading a book while they slept!
