The Kirkpatrick's D.I.Y. Project 2006 (Year Two)

Siding and Cabinet Prep

September 23 - 24, 2006

Work really has been sporadic this year. We took off the weekend of
September 8 - 10 for a family gathering. We also took the following weekend
off—September 15 - 17—just because we needed a break from
obligations for a change. These pictures represent what we accomplished
September 23 - 24. We figured we ought to kick it into high gear.

The first task of the day was for Mike to install fascia board.
That's sort of like a molding for the eaves (just under the
edge of the roof). It needs to be in place before we can install
the vinyl siding we ordered a couple of weeks ago.

Here Mike is painting some boards that will serve as faux
columns at each side of the porch where it meets the house. The
same type of boards will be installed around the garage doors,
but they won't be made to look like columns on the garage.

He painted the columns, too.

While he was putting paint new paint onto the porch columns, I was
removing old paint from the kitchen cabinets to prep for painting.

Mike waits for the paint to dry.

The temperature was only in the upper 70s or lower 80s, so it
wasn't really hot, but it sure was humid. It was quite a shock after
having enjoyed several very cool days and nights. It was so humid
that condensation formed little puddles on the concrete floor.
Picture the outside of a glass of ice water on a hot day.

This is why we don't want carpet. Doggie footprints
are easy to wipe off of hard surfaces. They were caused
by a combination of condensation on the floor and/or rain
and, of course, the dogs tracking in dirt from outside.

Look how nice the porch looks now that the fascia
is up, the trash is gone, and the columns are painted.

Here Mike installs one last outlet before we put the vapor
barrier on the wall between the house and garage. Now the
space is what Mike describes as "conditionable." That just
means the air is trapped in one spot so we can heat or cool
more effectively than trying to heat/cool an open shell.

Stapling the plastic into place.

Our very fancy door between house and garage.

Here I am on Sunday sanding cabinets.

Here's a close-up of one cabinet with the corners rounded for distressing.

The ever-so-lovely oven cabinet.

Mike works on building the over-the-stove hood.

He may look puzzled, but he knows what he is doing.

The rooms are slowly taking shape.

The tiny kitchen.

I am anxious to see my cabinets painted!

We couldn't resist snapping this picture of a not-so-close
neighbor's front yard. In the old days, you moved the rabbit ears
on your TV for better reception. Now, apparently, you just
use a sawhorse to reposition your satellite dish.

Next week should be more siding prep for Mike and the
painting of the cabinets for me. I'll be glad when this is
all finished so we can have some spare time for a change.
