Surrogate Children

Having dogs really is like having kids.

Sit still in a room, and the dogs find a cozy spot to lay. Unless it’s close to meal time. Or time for a walk, snack, mail run, etc. They are creatures of habit, too. Meg has her routine down, and you’d better stick to it.

Weed the flower beds, and the dogs investigate the flowers, too.

Go into the bathroom, and God forbid, close the door, and the dogs wait anxiously for you to emerge. Don’t close the door and they join you, of course.

Make a phone call and the dogs suddenly become noisy and/or playful.

Relax on the porch, just sitting, watching the world go by, and the dogs do the same.

Not that I am complaining. It’s just that the parallels humor me.

“Dogs are our link to paradise. They don’t know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring–it was peace.”
― Milan Kundera

I can’t imagine life without dogs. Really.

Seeing these images this morning, which were shot at the end of May, is what inspired this post. I’d gone out into the yard to capture some flower shots and, of course, the dogs followed. They apparently wanted to look at the flowers, too.

Meg, K, and Belle. “Old Girl,” “Middle Girl,” and “Little Girl.”

How odd it would be not to have them around.

Meg’s health is slowly failing. She’s deaf, has arthritis, some strange problem with her biliary tract, which we keep under control with a strict low-fat diet, and her muscles are weakening. She could be with us for years still. Or something catastrophic could happen and take her sooner. I hate to think of that day.

For now, I’ll just enjoy all of them with their silly little quirks. And continue to marvel at their insatiable curiosity…

Snow Belt Confirmed

A little over a week ago, I did a post on what I thought was our last snow storm of the season.

I was wrong. We got snowed on again.

Lucky for us, we only got a few inches.

It was very cold, though. And downright miserable. I am really ready for Spring now.

The dogs didn’t mind the snow too much.

Bell and K Wrastling.

Belle, who is BADLY in need of a haircut, and K enjoyed some outdoor “wrastling” for a change. They usually wrestle in the basement.

I made a little slideshow of them playing.

How badly does Belle need a trim? Our youngest, Eric, and his fiancee, Kelsey, came down for a visit last night. When Eric saw Belle, he thought she was a new foster dog I hadn’t told him about. As soon as it warms up, she’ll get bathed and trimmed.

Holding Out for Spring
Holding Out for Spring

The daffodils are blooming. It’s really time for Spring.

Saturday, it was like 60 and partly sunny. Really. Here’s proof.

Brianna (12), Joey (5), and Gaige (9)
Brianna (12), Joey (5), and Gaige (9)

The grand kids spent the weekend with us. On Saturday afternoon, I took them for a walk around town so Hubby could get a power nap.

They were hamming it up for the camera. And I wasn’t too serious about shooting, which is why this super-cute pic (I think) is blurry.

This next shot is my favorite from our stroll.

Although this next one makes me laugh. There’s a story behind it, which you have to read to appreciate the humor in the shot.

As we were walking through town, Gaige and Joey were walking ahead of Brianna and me. Since I was letting them be goofy in pictures, every now and then Gaige would stop and say, “Here’s a good place for a picture!”

As we neared my friend Janet’s store — The Empty Nest — I told them not to get too far ahead because there was a store window we had to stop at.

When Gaige got to the window, he looked in, and yelled back to me, “Brianna can stand in front of this one!”

It’s very pretty and VERY pink.

I made them pose there for me. The boys were not happy. Here’s that pic.

The boys were not loving all the pink.

They DO make me laugh.

More kid pics to come in the next post!

Reading into Things

They’ve had their dinner. And a long, vigorous walk. So what’s the problem?

Mama is trying to catch up on her blog reading, but it’s chewy time.

“Mama, did you forget?”

I’ll have to take a quick break to get away from this unrelenting glare!

Interesting Visitor

We had a visitor on Thursday. He showed up right before dinnertime.

He almost became dinner.

Come on down!
Come on down!

I don’t know where it came from, but the dogs were going NUTS. They wanted that coon. Bad.

Once I got the girls in the house, I watched to see what it would do. The dumb coon climbed down the tree, walked deeper into the yard, then climbed a smaller tree. It could have easily hopped over to the fence, into the driveway, onto the roof, etc. — any number of easy escape routes — from the first tree. Instead, it climbed the smaller tree in the middle of the yard. Then it backed down that tree and walked over to climb the big one again.

Dumbest coon I ever saw.

But it sure was cute.

Happy As Kids on Christmas Eve

It’s the dogs I’m speaking of. We’re at the WV Place for the first time in what feels like forever. And they are so excited to be here.

wv_place_8How excited? Like kids on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa.

Really.

As soon as we got here, they ran and ran and ran around the yard, sniffing out critters. Meg went down the hill to visit her friends, Buddy and Jean.

And then, all night long, they took turns pacing. I left them out around 3:00 AM, thinking they had to pee.

My reward for that was having to go out in the 20 degree darkness and drag them back in.

Still, the pacing continued.

I guess it was around 6:30 when I finally relented and got out of bed. Of course, they’re happiest when I go out with them. So off I trod.

It was cold! Still in the 20s. Everything was frosty.

The good news is, I got a few pics to share.

Despite our long absence, not much has changed.

It’s nice to be back, even if only for a brief visit.

I hope y’all are enjoying your Saturday!
