All Things Being Equal … Or Not

One would think if one ordered three of the exact same item from an online store, they would all arrive together.

When I placed the order, there was an anticipated delivery date of October 31. That was yesterday.

One arrived by mail on Friday. Yep, USPS.

The other two are still en route. Via UPS.

Which is why I continue to see sights like these.

Belle in the DBOC

Belle is the princess and likes to be first at everything. Especially claiming the DBOC (dog bed of choice) in my office every morning.

Meg in the DBOC

Of course, that is Meg’s absolute favorite bed. Remember this classic Meg slideshow?

There are currently only two beds in my office because floor space is so limited. If I unpacked and actually organized the place things might be different. But after spending 8+ hours a day in that room, the last thing I want to do is spend more time there.

So I get treated to scenes like this one often as they jockey for position.

Goofy Dogs

Meg is looking awfully comfortable. K looks like she is getting ready to speak. And Belle is licking her…

Let’s just say there’s a good reason I cropped her head out of that shot.

Hopefully that other package will arrive today.

Although I must say, I find the DBOC to be quite entertaining.

Great Day for Soup

Unless you live under a rock, or at least away from a TV, you know the Northeast US was hit with a rare October snowstorm yesterday. As far as accumulation goes, we didn’t get much. But it was still a cold, wet, nasty day.

Cold, Wet, and Nasty

You know what it means when the weather is like that, right? It’s a great day for soup!

I actually did quite a bit of running around in that nastiness. I went to Chantilly to visit a furniture store I’d been wanting to check out: Bare Woods and Home Furnishings. It was awesome. And overwhelming. That had so much very cool stuff, I didn’t know what to buy. So I didn’t buy anything.

But I’ll go back.

Instead, I went to Target to stock up on some essentials, and then I went home to prepare dinner.

I forgot to mention that I’d stopped at my favorite shop before leaving town to make sure I’d have that one key dinner ingredient.

Fresh Spinach Feta Bread

I just LOVE the Spinach Feta Bread from Great Harvest. It is dense, flavorful, and delicious.

I couldn’t decide if I wanted Chili or French Onion Soup. So I made Hubby pick. He opted for French Onion.

I use the Joy of Cooking recipe, which is fabulous, but takes about two hours to cook. It’s worth it. Trust me.

Waiting for Dinner

The dogs waited patiently for me to prepare their dinner while the soup cooked.

And while I took pictures of the bottle of wine I had gotten at Target.

Artful Wine

You gotta love living in a state where you can buy wine at Target.

Isn’t that a cool wine label?

The soup was delicious. Sorry I don’t have a picture of the finished product. But by then, I was absolutely starving and salivating over all the delicious smells.

I do have one final picture to share.

The Younguns

Here Belle and K wait for something. A treat maybe? I forget. This was after dinner and I just happened to have the camera in my hand for this rare moment when they were standing still next to each other and actually looking at the camera.

I would have Photoshopped the redeye out, but Hubby is waiting patiently for me to go cook breakfast like I’d promised. Over-medium eggs with more of that yummy Spinach Feta bread. And bacon. Oh my.

I hope you enjoy your Sunday!

UPDATE…

Just in case you were wondering how breakfast turned out.

Eggs Over Medium with Spinach Feta Toast and Bacon

Hubby said it was good enough for company.

Now are you ready for a visit?

Random Bit of Coolness

Every now and then, stuff pops up that catches me completely by surprise. Good stuff.

It doesn’t happen often. I guess life is too predictable. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I’ve had my share of crazy unpredictable lately!

As for the good thing…

I noticed on Facebook last night that a preview of the National Brittany Rescue and Adoption Network (NBRAN) 2012 calendar had been posted. Upon closer inspection, I was tickled to see a picture of K playing with Alice (our foster puppy during May 2011).

Here’s the picture I’m talking about.

K Playing with Alice

Nice, right? I love seeing my girls in print.

But that wasn’t the really cool part.

I commented about that being my Special K. And Sharlene, the lovely lady who is responsible for creating the calendar every year said, “I didn’t realize that was K.” (K, like both of my other dogs, is sort of famous. I’ve posted lots of pics of her.)

Shar followed that comment with an e-mail that said, “One of our Canadian volunteers did this for us when they had a meeting this summer at Malabar. I’ve altered the wording some and used it on the small tote bags to hold treats to sell at events and they have been popular. She did it in [liver and white] and [orange and white] both. You can tell it’s K from the position and I was the one to send the picture to her so I know it was K.”

The “this” she was talking about is the following graphic. I chopped the words off for the sake of this post.

My Special K

How cool is that? Damn cool, I think!

And it’s just like K to be wearing sunglasses.

Now K is not only in the calendar, her likeness is helping NBRAN raise money to help all of the other dogs in need.

I was especially happy to see that because the other cool drawing I have of my dogs was done before K joined the family.

ToadMama with Belle and Meg

Just tonight I unpacked that very print. Framed, of course. I’ll be hanging it in my office.

Now I can print a copy of K’s graphic to frame, too.

That really made me smile.

Thanks, Shar!

Revisiting West Virginia

Prior to this past weekend, we hadn’t been to the WV place since the last weekend in August. That’s unfortunate, really, because this really is my favorite time of year there. If you’ve been following for a long time, you know how much I enjoy watching the Fall colors emerge.

Riotous Color

Not to mention the fact that it’s getting cooler. You can’t beat a nice, crisp, Fall morning in the northeast.

Metamorphosis Along the Driveway

Especially when the sky is blue.

We haven’t had much blue sky these past few days. I don’t know about you, but here in Virginia, we’ve had rain, rain, and more rain.

Yellow

The trees just look so much nicer with that saturated blue-sky backdrop.

Here’s my favorite leaf shot from this weekend…

Red

I just love how the sun is lighting up those few leaves. That light isn’t photoshopped in. That’s what you get in the woods during early morning and close to dusk when the sun is low on the horizon filtering through the trees.

The girls were happy to be back in the woods, too.

Belle
K
Meg

I enjoyed being in a place that felt like home.

As much as I like this new/old house of ours, and the town, it just doesn’t feel like ours yet. We haven’t put our mark on it. Hopefully this weekend I’ll get a room or two decorated.

I really want to paint my office, too. Not this weekend, but soon. Right now, my office walls are off-white, the ceiling is white, there’s white woodwork, white  curtains, white blinds, and a tan rug. The only thing hanging on the wall so far is my white clock.

Ugh. It’s so booooorrrrriiinnngggg.

Our bedroom could use some paint, too.

There’s so much to do, I don’t know where to start. It’s all small stuff. But it’s a lot of small stuff.

It’ll all get done eventually.

Decorating is the sort of thing one can’t do in a hurry. I need to live in the rooms for a while before I can settle on a color that feels right. And as much stuff as I have to hang on the walls, I can’t stick it just anywhere.

Sigh…

That’s why it felt so good at the WV place. An awful lot of time and love has gone into making that place cozy.

I want this place to feel cozy NOW, darn it.

Another sigh …

I am not the most patient person.

Room With a View

I love the view from my front bedroom window. It makes me smile every day.

Front Bedroom Window

I could do without the unsightly wires. But don’t you just love the newly emerging Fall colors?

This is not a fabulous view, as views go, but it just looks so old-town. Which is what makes me smile. We’re enjoying this living-in-an-old-town adventure.

We don’t like the curtains either. They’re just not us. But I’m working on that!

Meg Likes the View, Too

The dogs like being able to see out of the windows. They’re adjusting to life in the “city,” too. More people. More sights. More sounds.

Of course, that all means more barking, but we’re working on that, too. They’re doing pretty good. But this house is very different. It’s quite an adjustment for dogs used to tearing around the house like crazy beasts to go from a carpeted house to one filled with hardwood floors.

Bathroom View

Here’s what you see out the back bathroom window. It looks very old-town, too, doesn’t it? It’s much nicer on a blue-sky day.

The only thing I don’t like about that particular window right now is this…

Stupid Stink Bug

This is the time of year those stupid stink bugs try their darnedest to get into your house. This one is trapped between the screen and the window. One day, I’ll open the window and put an end to its misery. Not freedom, if that’s what you’re thinking.  I’m leaning more along the lines of a burial at sea.

As for the dogs…

Bored Girls

They have not been super-cooperative in the picture-taking department. Nevertheless, they are all healthy, happy, and slowly adjusting to town life.

Our yard is pretty small at the moment. It’ll be much better one we extend the fence line a bit. That will take a little longer than we’d like. we need to go through the architectural review board for that one. We don’t have a homeowners’ association, but we live in Old Town Warrenton, which is a historic district. So we need to follow certain guidelines.

We’ll probably go to the WV place this weekend. We haven’t been since August! They’ll be happy to do some running, I’m sure. Perhaps I’ll get some decent dog pics then.

Just Dogs

I haven’t posted much about the dogs lately.

Shannon may not agree. She said she searched my Flickr site recently using the “family” tag, and the only family images that appeared were pictures of dogs!

That’s what happens when your kids grow up and leave the nest. They are replaced by dogs…

K

First is this shot of K with a sort of goofy look on her face.

Meg

And then there’s Meg. She’s the old gal.

Belle (standing) and K Hunting Mice

I don’t have any recent shots of Belle by herself.

K

Here’s another shot of K.

Mousers

I’ll close with this shot of K and Belle, still hunting.

I know these are not the best doggie pics. I’ll to do better next time.
