Girls’ Weekend

Back in late-March, when I reported on Gaige and Joey’s visit with us, I mentioned that I had a cool girls’ weekend planned for when Brianna was able to visit.

Well, that weekend FINALLY arrived.

It was actually a busy weekend that started with dinner on Friday night at Allison’s Restaurant in Crofton, Maryland. That’s where Eric, our youngest, is currently working. Within the past year, he started attending Anne Arundel Community College’s culinary arts program. And he LOVES it. All those years of letting him help in the kitchen paid off. He finally found his niche. Which is awesome considering all the difficulties we had getting that boy through school. But that’s a whole ‘nother story…

After a lovely dinner with Eric’s fiancee, Kelsey, and her parents, Jane and Greg, I went to their house, which is where I spent the night. (If you’re wondering about Hubby, I left him at home in Virginia with the dogs.)

Saturday morning, I continued north to Edgewood to get Brianna. Then it was back to Virginia.

We had to hustle as we had a 2:00 PM appointment. I didn’t let her in on the plan for the afternoon as it was supposed to start storming at some point, which meant our plans would have been canceled. She would have been so disappointed and we never would have heard the end of it.

All I told her was that we were going on a ride through the countryside and that I had a 2:00 appointment. She had to be wondering where the heck we were going as the place was pretty darn remote.

I have to give her credit, though her curiosity was probably killing her, she didn’t ask too many questions. As we neared our destination, the roads got steadily narrower, hillier, and windier. We were definitely in what felt like the middle of nowhere, riding through wide-open farmland and through cow pastures. I kept yakking away about how much I like the country, how pretty I thought it was, how much I like critters, etc.

At one point she said, “Do you still have an appointment?” I told her yes. Then she said, “Is it just for you?” After I told her, it was for her, too, she was quiet. She was probably wondering what the heck this appointment could entail in such a remote area.

When we turned in at the entrance to our destination, she read the “trail ride” part of the sign aloud. She probably would have questioned that, but that’s when she spotted the pasture full of horses.

“Horses!” she exclaimed. “G, I want to pet some horses.”

I laughed and told her I thought she would definitely be able to pet a horse.

She was so busy thinking about getting to pet a horse that she didn’t ask any more questions as we parked, got the stuff we needed out of the truck, then headed to the barn to sign in for our trail ride.  As I handed the guy the release forms we’d had to fill out in advance and my credit card, she said, “I want to ride a horse.”

When the guy said, “Well good, that’s exactly what you are going to do,” I think she actually squealed.

That’s when the chatter started.

G, I’ve never ridden a horse before. This will be my first time. Where are the horses. Will I get to ride by myself? Which horse will I ride. Have you ever ridden? This will be our first time together. Etc., etc.

Could that smile be any wider?

We waited on the back porch of the barn as the last few folks arrived. The horses were all saddled up and ready to roll.

She was super-excited and declared that she wanted a white one.

Brianna and Applejack

So she was really tickled to learn that she would indeed be riding a white horse. He had brown spots, but was apparently the horse she’d been hoping for. His name was Applejack.

And she got to ride him all by herself!

Brianna and Applejack

Getting to do grown-up seeming stuff, like controlling a horse, is HUGE when you are a kid. Especially when you are only 11 and the stuff you get to do is usually limited by the age and/or abilities of your younger siblings.

Brianna guiding Applejack.

We had to ride single file. I told the ranch folks just to make sure I rode behind her. I wanted to be able to see if anything went wrong. It was also handy for taking pictures.

Riding through the countryside.

The one time I’d ridden previously was when Hubby and I were dating. We were at some little stable in Howard County Maryland on old, tired horses with one thing on their mind. Returning to the barn. It sucked.

This ride experience was MUCH different. It was ten times better. We rode for about ninety minutes, doing a big loop through pastures and woodlands. Over hills. Through dells. Across streams.

It was awesome. Really.

Enjoying the scenery.

Brianna did a fantastic job guiding her horse. Yes, they were docile trail animals, but they did require guidance. Applejack kept wanting to pass the lead horse. Since we were instructed to keep the horses single-file at all times, she had to rein Applejack in frequently.

Brianna was a natural.

I was quite proud of the way Brianna handled herself on Applejack.

I could not have picked a better place for our ride. Having read all about the ranch beforehand, I was really looking forward to our trip. It was everything I had hoped for and more.

The  Marriott Ranch, which is where we went riding, is a 4,200-acre ranch owned by the Marriott Corporation.

Bucolic may seem cliched, but it is the best way to describe the place. Hubby and I had happened through the area by chance a couple of weeks earlier while out riding our bikes. When I told him about the place a few days before our trail ride, he remarked that he’d seen a Marriott sign and wondered what that was all about. I mean, the place really is remote. The Appalachian Trail even runs nearby.

Pasture at the trail-ride barn.

In reading about the facility, I was quite intrigued to learn of its history. There’s a manor house located on the original property purchased by Marriott that had always been referred to as Fairfield Farm. The house is now a working bed-and-breakfast inn. In fact, it is the only B&B in the Marriott portfolio of properties. If you follow the Marriott Ranch link I provided earlier, you can read a bit of the history.

Does “Fairfield” ring a bell? Fairfield Inn by Marriott is a lower-cost brand of hotels owned by the Marriott Corporation. Now you know where the name came from.

Original manor house on the Fairfield Farm

It really was a fabulous day. We are both ready to go back.

I told Brianna her Mom would probably enjoy it, too. She wasn’t so sure. When I asked her why she didn’t agree, she said her Mom scares easily and doesn’t like to mess up her clothes. That comment made me laugh.

I wonder what Amy would have to say about that?

I also had to laugh later when we stopped at a country market for drinks. We each bought Sponge Bob ice cream bars. As the guy rang us up, Brianna said, very seriously, “G, I have an important tip for you. Eat the eyeballs last.” After the cashier and I both giggled, she said, “Really. The eyeballs are bubble gum, so you have to eat them last!”

The rest of the weekend was fun, too. After dinner, we watched some movies. And ate some ice cream. Then on Sunday, Brianna and I painted sun-catchers together and baked some blondies.

As usual, the time went by way too fast. But at least we got to make some fun memories together that will hopefully last a lifetime.

I really got a chuckle when, after our ride, I told Brianna you have to be at least ten to ride there.

“That means your brothers can’t do this. Too bad for them, eh?”

“Yeah!” she said, with a conspiratorial giggle. I’m sure she loves knowing it is something she’ll be able to savor all for herself.

We just might have to make this girls’ weekend an annual thing. At least for the next couple of years.

Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad…

…but three would have been better.

All three of our grand kids play organized sports. So it is next to impossible to find a weekend that they are all available to come for a visit. Which is good and bad. Bad because we don’t get to see them very often. Good because sometimes it’s hard to find stuff they all three like to do.(Brianna is 11, Gaige is 8, and Joey is 4.)

This weekend, Gaige and Joey came for a visit, so it was a real guy weekend.

Before the guy stuff started, we had to feed the kids a snack.

Joey Eating a Snicker-doodle Muffin

Shannon recently posted a photo of Snicker-doodle Muffins she’d made. Hubby decided he’d one-up her by making the same muffins and posting pictures of the boys enjoying them.

Thumbs Up on the Muffins

Of course, he’s got the advantage there since she’s now living in California.

The guy stuff began right after snack time when it was off to Pop’s workshop for some building projects.

Introduction to the Drill Press
Joey Drills a Hole
Gaige Using the Drill Press

Pop did a very good job explaining the safety rules, equipping everyone with safety glasses, and overseeing the tool use VERY closely.

Gaige Showing Off His Boat

Hubby made the boat bases before the kids came. There’s one here for Brianna, too, in case she asks about boat-making when she comes for a visit.

Gluing the Mast
Seating the Mast
Cleaning Off the Excess Glue

After the masts were in place, it was my job to make flags. A small but important role for G.

Then it was time for the next project.

The boys watched from a safe distance as Pop cut the pipes into the right lengths. I think Gaige was in charge of reading the measurements and quantities from the diagram.

The boys are way too young for saw lessons.

Joey Begins Pipe Assembly
Gaige Adding a Fitting

The Finished Product

They’re finished! Wondering what it is?

It’s a Marshmallow Gun. You insert a miniature marshmallow, blow hard, and out shoots the ammunition. Joey, couldn’t say “ammunition.” It kept coming out as “Army mission,” which was very confusing for me when, just before they left, he asked me twice, “What about our Army mission?”

Shoot me! Shoot me!

The dogs were actually willing targets. They LOVE eating marshmallows. Joey does, too. I’m not sure who ate more bullets, Joey or the dogs. The boys were a bit dismayed that their ammo kept disappearing.

Joey and His Gun

It took Joey awhile to figure out how to blow hard enough to actually launch a marshmallow, but he did finally get it.

Afternoon Stroll

The boys wanted to visit the caboose, so Pop walked them down to the Greenway. I stayed home to cook dinner.

You won’t see any pictorial proof here, but I did actually do more than take pictures all weekend. I was in charge of food. (I made the best from-scratch pancakes on Sunday topped with homemade whipped cream and strawberries!) But my primary “job” was Lego building. Gaige gets bored with Lego’s. So he and Pop watched a movie or two while Joey and I built stuff.

Not that I am complaining. Quite a few of the bricks in the collection were mine as a kid. The rest were Eric’s. We have a LOT of Lego’s.

G's Project

On the way down, Joey asked Pop, “Are we going to the house with the Lego’s? Or the other house?” When Pop told him the Lego house, he said “Yes!”

Pretzel Baking

Sunday’s project for the boys was pretzel baking.

Joey rolling a pretzel.
Gaige with his first pretzel.
Joey was quite excited when he "got it" (the pretzel folding technique).
I think the dogs were feeling neglected.

Pop made a B-shaped pretzel for the boys to take home to Brianna. Which, of course, meant Gaige and Joey then had to have their own letter pretzels.

The pre-baking pretzel bath.
The finished boats.

While the pretzels baked, I had the boys pose for a picture with their boats. Notice their shirts. See how Joey’s looks sort of big and Gaige’s is so small his t-shirt is hanging out of the sleeves and at the bottom? I didn’t realize it until I met Amy halfway to get them home and she asked, “Why is Joey wearing Gaige’s shirt? Hey, wait a minute, what’s Gaige wearing?” Apparently the shirt Gaige chose used to be his.

The Guys

In case you are wondering if Hubby was as tired as he looked in the picture, the answer is YES. 🙂

That picture was taken not long before I headed out with the boys Sunday afternoon.

Now I am anxious for Brianna to come down for her girls’ weekend. I have something very special planned. Something I have been wanting to do that Hubby has no interest in whatsoever.

Do you think the boys enjoyed their visit?

Pumpkinville

I bet you can’t guess what I did this weekend.

It involved a hairy cow.

Mooo! (that's "hello there" in cowspeak)

A stupid sign.

No Do Not Have Fun!?! (That's all I could see from afar.)

Some crazy teeth… (I couldn’t help but think of Whoopie Goldberg in that scene from the Color Purple movie when Miss Celie smiled for the first time and her teeth filled the entire screen.)

Cheese!

Seemingly endless repetition of the phrase, “Winner, winner, chicken dinner.”

Oh, and a really pushy jackass.

Give up?

"Winner, winner, chicken dinner!"

Amy and the boys came for a visit!

Amy with the Pushy Jackass

Brianna and TJ had to stay home in Maryland because Brianna was supposed to have a soccer tournament.  It got canceled, which really stinks. It would have been nice to have all of them down for a visit.

Though, to be honest, Brianna probably would have been bored at Pumpkinville. That is where Amy and I took the boys on Saturday. We’d actually planned it pretty far in advance.

Pumpkinville is the annual Fall festival at the Leesburg Animal Park in nearby Loudon County. It was sort of lame, but the boys had fun.

Boys Having Fun (aka Gaige Goofing Off for Camera)

And they had a really cool petting zoo, which I loved.

Joey and Gaige

It was a nice visit. On Sunday, we walked down to the Warrenton Branch Greenway, which is about two blocks from our house, to take some pictures.

More on that adventure later.

I took lots of pictures. Some good, and some not so good.

We’ll save the outtakes for another post, okay?

I Walk the Line

I can’t help but think of Johnny Cash when I look at that last shot.

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

Here’s the best shot of the weekend. It didn’t come easy. Or cheap!

Joey, Amy, and Gaige

More shots from their visit to come in my next post.

I hope your weekend was equally as much fun!

Just Another Day

Happy Valentine’s Day. I’m only saying that ’cause I feel like I should. I mean, it is Valentine’s Day.

It’s not that I’m anti-love or anything. And I am certainly not anti-chocolate (you can give me chocolate on any day, for any reason, and I’ll be happy). Hubby and I just don’t celebrate this particular holiday. I’m not sure why. Shannon pretty much thinks it’s a stupid holiday, perpetuated by greeting card companies, florists, and jewelry manufacturers. I don’t completely agree. I don’t completely disagree with Shannon either.

I’ve always said I think it’s silly to spend a fortune on flowers on Valentine’s Day. But I wouldn’t say no to some good chocolate. I’m definitely not one who would want flowers or a fancy (expensive!) diamond necklace. I’d be perfectly okay with a nice high-visibility motorcycle jacket though. (That’s a useful gift.) And some chocolate. Notice I didn’t say “or” some chocolate?

Maybe it’s that getting gifts on Valentine’s Day is just too predictable for me. I don’t know. I could debate this with myself for hours. So I’ll just change the subject. ‘kay?

We did not go to West Virginia this weekend. Gaige, our oldest grandson, had a wrestling tournament on Sunday. They can sometimes last all day. Or at least a big part of the day. They start really early, too. Amy didn’t want to make Joey sit through yet another hours-long wrestling match, so she asked us to keep Joey for the weekend. We’re anxious to get the WV kitchen finished, but we couldn’t say no. Especially since the kids are all so busy. We don’t get to see much of them.

Did I mention that the weather finally got warm? Or remind you that we have two brand-new bikes in our garage saying “ride me”?

Things got pretty quiet in the house at one point on Saturday. I heard some strange noises coming from the garage. When I went to investigate, this is what I saw…

Pop and Joey, pretending to ride.

Joey was all about Pop this weekend.

We could have gone for a ride at naptime, but it was only in the low 40s. Hubby opted to take a nap, too. I opted for a ride. I needed to run to the grocery store anyway. It was a little chilly, but not unbearable. Those heated grips make a huge difference. When my hands get cold during rides, they tend to cramp. Hand cramps are never good on a motorcycle.

I only did about 30 miles.  You have to ride pretty carefully when riding on new tires. Cold tires aren’t good either. And there were quite a few places where snow melt was running across the road.

Sunday temps were in the 50s at naptime. Wanna guess what we both did?

Ready to ride.

We were only gone for about an hour and a half. It was awesome. It was pretty cloudy so it felt sort of chilly. But it was still great. I really like my new bike. It is so different than the big, fat cruiser. It’s so much lighter, more nimble, and easy to maneuver. I’ll be really glad when the break-in period is over, the tires are broken in, and the roads are clean and dry.

Off we went!

Shannon was kind enough to take these pictures for us. And stick around to keep an eye on Joey while we were away. He actually slept for a couple of hours. I’d already consumed two nice, warming, Baileys and coffee drinks by the time he woke up.

Now those really hit the spot! 🙂

Vroom, vroom!

All in all it was a pretty good weekend.

You Capture – Holiday Favorites

Those of you who saw my post the other day know that my currently deployed son-in-law is home for a brief visit.

What I did not explain is the fact that their three kids were at another grandparents’ house for a few days so they could have a little bit of adult time. They knew, once the kids saw their father, there’d be no such thing as adult time. They’ll be on him like glue. Not just any glue either. Super Glue.

I’m proud to say that my obsession with photographing or otherwise recording special family moments has completely rubbed off on Amy. It was her idea for me to accompany her to the airport so I could get pictures of the reunion. And we were both thinking about possible video opportunities. The only problem was that the kids weren’t staying at our house.

No problem. At a little after 6:00 AM, she called us (under normal circumstances, that would be a no-no) to say she was bringing her husband to our house. She dropped him off here then went and picked up the kids and brought them here, too. At Hubby’s insistence, I was positioned behind TJ with the video camera. Shannon was on the sofa with the still camera. It was Hubby’s job to answer the door and corral the kids in the foyer so they could remove their coats before coming all of the way into the house.

It worked like a charm.

Oh wait. I forgot to tell you to grab a tissue, didn’t I? Sorry!

The video is awesome, yes. But this next picture is most definitely my holiday favorite this year. Can you see the glow of happiness on each and every one of their faces?

The Happy Family

I told Amy I thought this just might be her new favorite picture. I wonder if I was right?

As an aside… this is the sort of thing these soldiers of ours and their families, both here and abroad, have to sacrifice every day. So the next time you see a soldier, be sure to say thanks. Okay?

What I Didn’t Do

Wow, did the last two days ever FLY!

We had Christmas Eve dinner at our house because Amy and her kids couldn’t be here on Christmas Day. Eric’s girlfriend, Kelsey, was here, too, which was nice.

Then on Christmas day, Hubby’s Mom and my parents joined Hubby, Shannon, Eric, and me for dinner. Which was also nice.

I took quite a few pics on Christmas Eve. But I didn’t even think about picking my camera up on Christmas day.

Can you believe that?

I can’t. I missed getting a picture of Hubby’s Mom in her pretty Christmas outfit. I didn’t get a picture of my parents either. And I REALLY wanted to have someone take a picture of Hubby and I together in front of our Christmas tree. Really. But I even forgot about that.

Jeez.

It was a lovely day anyway.

At least I have a few shots to share from Christmas Eve.

The calm before the "storm."

All of the gifts were wrapped and placed around the tree.

The "doll' atop our tree.

Last weekend, when Joey was here, he saw the angel that sits atop our tree. He either said our tree was stupid or funny because we had a doll on top of the tree instead of a star. I like our angel okay. But what I really miss is this awful cardboard star that Shannon, Amy, Eric and I made during one of our very first Christmases together. I wish I knew where that thing went.

Ho Ho Ho

I thought for sure someone would comment about the face on this Santa Claus. I’m not sure which of my girlfriends gave this one to me, but I think it was Carol. He’s got a very unique mug, wouldn’t you say?

I took a few pics of the ornaments on our tree.

I love snowmen.

I really like snowmen. And birds. From a decor perspective AND a real-life perspective.

Dark-eyed Junco

My Aunt Kathy gave me this bird ornament several years back. She knows I like birds, but she didn’t know what this particular bird was called (Dark-eyed Junco) or that it is one of my favorite birds. They’re winter birds in this area. They’re pretty social and think nothing of hanging out on our back steps for the dogs to watch and/or salivate over.

All decorated for the holiday.

I also love the way our house looks during the holidays.

Brianna couldn't resist helping Aunt Shannon apply the egg wash to her rolls.

I especially love the house when it’s full of our kids. And our grand kids.

Lego building.

The grand kids always enjoy playing with the gazillion Legos I have here. Some were mine when I was a kid and some were Uncle Eric’s. They asked Uncle Eric to build Legos with them. Shannon and I were busy in the kitchen. I did pop in long enough to get a picture of Eric surrounded by his niece and nephews. What I missed, however, was one of them asking Kelsey (Eric’s girlfriend) if she is their Aunt now. And whether she and Eric would be getting married.

The egg wash helps the rolls to brown AND helps the garnish adhere. In this case, there was poppy seeds, sesame seeds and kosher salt. Shannon makes excellent dinner rolls.

Kids in the kitchen.

It was nice having all the kids together. Left to right are Amy, Eric, Shannon, and Kelsey.

Grand kids opening gifts.

I’ll be kicking myself for a while for not capturing shots of the parents. It really was a lovely Christmas celebration.

Tonight, we’re supposed to be getting together with some of our friends. Unless this “blizzard” actually materializes. We’re only expecting about six inches of snow, but you never know what we’ll actually get.

Rest assured, though, I won’t forget to take pictures of THAT.
