Holding

It’s been quiet around here lately. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It just doesn’t give me much to blog about.

House at Corner of Main & South 6th Street in Warrenton

Eric and Kelsey were here for a visit this past weekend. It was nice spending time with them. But I didn’t lift the camera even once.

Sometimes I get in photographic slumps. Although I must admit it was nice just enjoying their company.

Eric and Kelsey (from November 2011)

That’s an old picture. Not old-old. It was taken four months ago. I figured I’d better post at least one pic of them in case you’ve forgotten what they look like.

It was fun watching Eric cook. And clean up after himself.

Even the baby of the family is growing up. He’s taking college courses in culinary science and loving it. He made dinner (a jalapeno cornbread casserole) for us on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday (French toast with strawberry sauce).

We don’t get to see them much, so I really enjoyed the visit. I just didn’t take any pictures to prove it.

Spring is Still Here

Maybe my next post will be a bit more inspired…

Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad…

…but three would have been better.

All three of our grand kids play organized sports. So it is next to impossible to find a weekend that they are all available to come for a visit. Which is good and bad. Bad because we don’t get to see them very often. Good because sometimes it’s hard to find stuff they all three like to do.(Brianna is 11, Gaige is 8, and Joey is 4.)

This weekend, Gaige and Joey came for a visit, so it was a real guy weekend.

Before the guy stuff started, we had to feed the kids a snack.

Joey Eating a Snicker-doodle Muffin

Shannon recently posted a photo of Snicker-doodle Muffins she’d made. Hubby decided he’d one-up her by making the same muffins and posting pictures of the boys enjoying them.

Thumbs Up on the Muffins

Of course, he’s got the advantage there since she’s now living in California.

The guy stuff began right after snack time when it was off to Pop’s workshop for some building projects.

Introduction to the Drill Press
Joey Drills a Hole
Gaige Using the Drill Press

Pop did a very good job explaining the safety rules, equipping everyone with safety glasses, and overseeing the tool use VERY closely.

Gaige Showing Off His Boat

Hubby made the boat bases before the kids came. There’s one here for Brianna, too, in case she asks about boat-making when she comes for a visit.

Gluing the Mast
Seating the Mast
Cleaning Off the Excess Glue

After the masts were in place, it was my job to make flags. A small but important role for G.

Then it was time for the next project.

The boys watched from a safe distance as Pop cut the pipes into the right lengths. I think Gaige was in charge of reading the measurements and quantities from the diagram.

The boys are way too young for saw lessons.

The Finished Product

They’re finished! Wondering what it is?

It’s a Marshmallow Gun. You insert a miniature marshmallow, blow hard, and out shoots the ammunition. Joey, couldn’t say “ammunition.” It kept coming out as “Army mission,” which was very confusing for me when, just before they left, he asked me twice, “What about our Army mission?”

Shoot me! Shoot me!

The dogs were actually willing targets. They LOVE eating marshmallows. Joey does, too. I’m not sure who ate more bullets, Joey or the dogs. The boys were a bit dismayed that their ammo kept disappearing.

Joey and His Gun

It took Joey awhile to figure out how to blow hard enough to actually launch a marshmallow, but he did finally get it.

Afternoon Stroll

The boys wanted to visit the caboose, so Pop walked them down to the Greenway. I stayed home to cook dinner.

You won’t see any pictorial proof here, but I did actually do more than take pictures all weekend. I was in charge of food. (I made the best from-scratch pancakes on Sunday topped with homemade whipped cream and strawberries!) But my primary “job” was Lego building. Gaige gets bored with Lego’s. So he and Pop watched a movie or two while Joey and I built stuff.

Not that I am complaining. Quite a few of the bricks in the collection were mine as a kid. The rest were Eric’s. We have a LOT of Lego’s.

G's Project

On the way down, Joey asked Pop, “Are we going to the house with the Lego’s? Or the other house?” When Pop told him the Lego house, he said “Yes!”

Pretzel Baking

Sunday’s project for the boys was pretzel baking.

Joey rolling a pretzel.
Gaige with his first pretzel.
Joey was quite excited when he "got it" (the pretzel folding technique).
I think the dogs were feeling neglected.

Pop made a B-shaped pretzel for the boys to take home to Brianna. Which, of course, meant Gaige and Joey then had to have their own letter pretzels.

The pre-baking pretzel bath.
The finished boats.

While the pretzels baked, I had the boys pose for a picture with their boats. Notice their shirts. See how Joey’s looks sort of big and Gaige’s is so small his t-shirt is hanging out of the sleeves and at the bottom? I didn’t realize it until I met Amy halfway to get them home and she asked, “Why is Joey wearing Gaige’s shirt? Hey, wait a minute, what’s Gaige wearing?” Apparently the shirt Gaige chose used to be his.

The Guys

In case you are wondering if Hubby was as tired as he looked in the picture, the answer is YES. 🙂

That picture was taken not long before I headed out with the boys Sunday afternoon.

Now I am anxious for Brianna to come down for her girls’ weekend. I have something very special planned. Something I have been wanting to do that Hubby has no interest in whatsoever.

Do you think the boys enjoyed their visit?

Late Report on a Holiday Visit

This post is a tad late, but that’s okay. Right? Right.

It’s actually a very unique post. There are FOUR pictures of me in this one post.

Try not to get too excited.

Wondering how I managed that? There was someone else present with a camera for a change. None of these pictures even came out of my camera. How about that?

Me and Hubby

My parents, brother (Tom), sister-in-law (Sharen), nephew (Josh), son (Eric), and fiancee (Kelsey) came to Virginia for a visit the Friday after Christmas. Sharen is the one responsible for all of the pics (thanks, Sharen!).

Pop (aka the treat guy) Greets the Dogs

We all love having visitors. That includes the girls. Especially when those visitors come bearing treats as Pop always does.

During the Tour

That’s not an especially great shot, but it’s the only one where you can see Sharen, the guest photographer. Look at those facial expressions. Josh and Tom both have that “Oh, God, she’s taking pictures in the bathroom?” look. I recognize that because I get similar looks often. And me, I’m just tickled to see there are other people in the world who shoot pictures in seemingly weird places. (I was taking pictures in a women’s bathroom last night!)

Tom Greeting the Girls

The girls were loving all of the extra attention. Tom, Sharen, and Josh are cat people. At least they think they are cat people. Check this out…

Hugs!

I bet Josh, shown above hugging Meg, would love to have a dog.

Lap Time

And Meg sure seems to be enjoying Tom’s lap!

Kelsey and Mawsie

Meanwhile, Kelsey and Mawsie were having a good chuckle over something. I was in the kitchen preparing lunch, so have no idea.

More Lap Time

Hard to tell who is happier in that shot. Don’t you think Josh would love a dog? Until he had to scoop poop anyway.

Meg is our friendliest dog. She loves everyone.

Bashful Belle

Belle and K are both friendly, too, it just takes them a little while to warm up to folks.

Hubby Giving K an Ear Rub

Of course, they’re all quite lovey with me and Hubby all of the time. Unless they know it’s time for a bath!

Hubby's Workshop

Sharen even captured a sneak peek at Hubby’s workshop. He’s been chomping at the bit to get that set up so he could start making stuff again.

Dining Table

She got a picture of our new dining room table, too. Ignore the chairs. They are waiting for me to paint them. It’s funny that the table doesn’t look big in the picture, but it seats eight adults comfortably. With Josh there, we even managed to squeeze a ninth person in (there were more chairs in the room at the time).

All in all, it was a very nice visit.

Here’s one last shot of me…

Belle Doing a High Five for Treats

Can you believe it is almost the middle of January already?

Christmas Re-cap

So, how was your Christmas? Mine was awesome. I was going to tell you all about my cool gifts, then I saw one of my blogger buddies did sort of a gift inventory post. I decided to do the copycat thing and post pics of my gifts, too. But I have to get to work, so that’ll have to wait. In the meantime, here are some family pics from Christmas day.

Hubby and I drove up to Baltimore for Christmas. We took the girls, too, since we knew we’d be gone for awhile. We dropped them off at his Mom’s house and then went to visit with my parents.

My Mom and Dad

We saw Eric and Kelsey briefly before they had to scurry off to PA to visit with her family. I didn’t get a picture of them, so here’s a shot from about a month ago…

Eric and Kelsey

That’s actually one of their engagement photos. They make a very cute couple. We’re all quite excited for them! (The wedding is scheduled for April 2013.)

After visiting with my parents for awhile, we went and visited with Hubby’s Mom. Since Shannon is in San Diego, we Skyped with her while she opened the gifts we’d mailed to her. I didn’t get a pic of the computer screen (that would be pretty lame anyway), but here’s a pic of Shannon with Hubby from this past September.

Hubby and Shannon

Amy and family met us at Grandma’s house. We were all very happy to see them together. You may or may not remember that last Christmas, TJ was deployed.

Amy's Family

Brianna, who recently turned 11, is getting pretty tall. In fact, she’s almost caught up to Grandma.

Brianna and GG

The boys were looking awfully cute. And they even posed nicely for a picture.

Gaige and Joey

Sort of. Gaige has this thing about making weird faces in pictures. He’ll regret that one day when he’s grown and I show his girlfriends all these goofy-face shots I have.

The Grandkids

That one is better. I cannot believe how fast they are all growing!

Hubby and Me

Here’s one of Hubby and me. He’s looking a bit Oriental. Normally I would’ve selected a different shot — Amy took several — but they were really blurry. She’s not used to my camera.

Pop and Grandkids

Here’s one of Hubby with the grandkids. The boys were watching Pop play with Amy’s Kindle and Brianna was fooling with her iPod. Techno-Christmas!

Finally, here’s a shot of me…

Me in the Scarf Granny Trace Made for Me Last Year

I’m looking a bit shiny. I wanted to get a shot earlier in the day when I could’ve gone outside and captured this without the flash. But I forgot. I still wanted to show off the scarf Granny Trace made for me last year, so you just have to suffer through the shiny pic. Sorry!

I’d love to hear all about your holiday. More pics to come later this week when my parents, brother, sister-in-law, nephew, Eric, and Kelsey come to VA for a visit…

Secrets Revealed

This has been quite a year. The last couple of months have been exciting, with the move and all. But they have also been tough on me because I’ve been keeping secrets.

Not the bad kind of secrets (i.e., lies told to deceive, manipulate, and control people), but the good kind of surprise secrets. Secrets kept because nice surprises are fun every once in a while.

Grandma, Joey, and Mike

I ended my last post telling you it was my mother-in-law’s (MIL’s) birthday weekend — she turned 80 on Friday, November 18 — but that she didn’t want a party. Well, to honor her wishes, we did not have a party. We just invited her to spend the weekend with us instead.

What we also did not do was tell her that the kids would be here, too. All of the kids.

We flew Shannon in from California. (My MIL hasn’t seen her in over six months.)

Amy and all of the grand kids were able to come. Eric came, too, along with Kelsey, his new FIANCEE!

The only missing family member was Amy’s husband, TJ, who had a prior Army Reserve drill commitment.

Did you notice I said “fiancee”? That was another secret I had to keep for awhile.

Our baby is getting married! Can you believe it? Not until 2013 though.

I’ve known since like July or August. But couldn’t tell anyone until he’d actually proposed and given Kelsey the ring.

I cannot tell you how relieved I was when Friday FINALLY arrived.

The weekend was a huge hit. We had ten people and three dogs running around this place. It was totally chaotic and completely wonderful.

Actually, it was quite odd last night when it was just Mike and I here again, sitting at our little breakfast table eating dinner.

Other than some yummy meals, we didn’t have anything specific planned. We just all hung out together and visited.

I didn’t take nearly as many pictures as I should have, but here are a few shots from the weekend.

We’ll be having a pretty quiet Thanksgiving, but the birthday weekend was certainly lots of fun.

Pumpkinville

I bet you can’t guess what I did this weekend.

It involved a hairy cow.

Mooo! (that's "hello there" in cowspeak)

A stupid sign.

No Do Not Have Fun!?! (That's all I could see from afar.)

Some crazy teeth… (I couldn’t help but think of Whoopie Goldberg in that scene from the Color Purple movie when Miss Celie smiled for the first time and her teeth filled the entire screen.)

Cheese!

Seemingly endless repetition of the phrase, “Winner, winner, chicken dinner.”

Oh, and a really pushy jackass.

Give up?

"Winner, winner, chicken dinner!"

Amy and the boys came for a visit!

Amy with the Pushy Jackass

Brianna and TJ had to stay home in Maryland because Brianna was supposed to have a soccer tournament.  It got canceled, which really stinks. It would have been nice to have all of them down for a visit.

Though, to be honest, Brianna probably would have been bored at Pumpkinville. That is where Amy and I took the boys on Saturday. We’d actually planned it pretty far in advance.

Pumpkinville is the annual Fall festival at the Leesburg Animal Park in nearby Loudon County. It was sort of lame, but the boys had fun.

Boys Having Fun (aka Gaige Goofing Off for Camera)

And they had a really cool petting zoo, which I loved.

Joey and Gaige

It was a nice visit. On Sunday, we walked down to the Warrenton Branch Greenway, which is about two blocks from our house, to take some pictures.

More on that adventure later.

I took lots of pictures. Some good, and some not so good.

We’ll save the outtakes for another post, okay?

I Walk the Line

I can’t help but think of Johnny Cash when I look at that last shot.

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

Here’s the best shot of the weekend. It didn’t come easy. Or cheap!

Joey, Amy, and Gaige

More shots from their visit to come in my next post.

I hope your weekend was equally as much fun!
