Revisiting West Virginia

Prior to this past weekend, we hadn’t been to the WV place since the last weekend in August. That’s unfortunate, really, because this really is my favorite time of year there. If you’ve been following for a long time, you know how much I enjoy watching the Fall colors emerge.

Riotous Color

Not to mention the fact that it’s getting cooler. You can’t beat a nice, crisp, Fall morning in the northeast.

Metamorphosis Along the Driveway

Especially when the sky is blue.

We haven’t had much blue sky these past few days. I don’t know about you, but here in Virginia, we’ve had rain, rain, and more rain.

Yellow

The trees just look so much nicer with that saturated blue-sky backdrop.

Here’s my favorite leaf shot from this weekend…

Red

I just love how the sun is lighting up those few leaves. That light isn’t photoshopped in. That’s what you get in the woods during early morning and close to dusk when the sun is low on the horizon filtering through the trees.

The girls were happy to be back in the woods, too.

I enjoyed being in a place that felt like home.

As much as I like this new/old house of ours, and the town, it just doesn’t feel like ours yet. We haven’t put our mark on it. Hopefully this weekend I’ll get a room or two decorated.

I really want to paint my office, too. Not this weekend, but soon. Right now, my office walls are off-white, the ceiling is white, there’s white woodwork, white  curtains, white blinds, and a tan rug. The only thing hanging on the wall so far is my white clock.

Ugh. It’s so booooorrrrriiinnngggg.

Our bedroom could use some paint, too.

There’s so much to do, I don’t know where to start. It’s all small stuff. But it’s a lot of small stuff.

It’ll all get done eventually.

Decorating is the sort of thing one can’t do in a hurry. I need to live in the rooms for a while before I can settle on a color that feels right. And as much stuff as I have to hang on the walls, I can’t stick it just anywhere.

Sigh…

That’s why it felt so good at the WV place. An awful lot of time and love has gone into making that place cozy.

I want this place to feel cozy NOW, darn it.

Another sigh …

I am not the most patient person.

That’s Amore

Amy figured out what was going on in the picture I posted yesterday (re-posted below).

Bug Sex!

Shannon was close with her guess, but was missing a couple of critical details. First, there are two stick bugs in the photo, not one like Shannon guessed. Second, they’re mating. Or, as Hubby so eloquently explained, “One bug is sticking it to the other!”

I’ve always known these insects to be referred to as walking sticks or stick bugs. They’re scientific name is Phasmatodea or Phasmids.

We’ve got lots of them at the WV place. I’d see one occasionally at our old Maryland house. But in West Virginia, they are regulars.

We see skinny brown ones like this often.

Even if we do see them often, I still find them fascinating.

An unusual green stick bug.

I don’t remember ever having seen a green one before.

And I certainly don’t remember seeing two stick bugs locked in an amorous embrace.

I thought you might find them interesting, so I snapped a few photos. But when I saw the SECOND couple going at it, I knew I had to do a post.

Sticking it to her...

Actually, the second shot was the first couple I spotted. They were pretty obvious right about at eye level on the back of our house. I’m not sure how I managed to spot the second couple hanging out on our electric meter.

And I always thought you rubbed two sticks together to make fire, not more sticks…

All is Well

We managed to weather the hurricane, so far, unscathed.

We’re actually at the WV place. We had to go to the Lowe’s in LaVale to pick up a washer/dryer that we ordered. Timing was pretty good on that one, eh? We got to sit out the hurricane with very little impact.

We even got to go for a motorcycle ride yesterday.

Of course, the last 20 minutes of that ride were through an absolute deluge. And we were not wearing rain gear.Honestly, I thought we were going to miss the rain. Once it started, though, it poured. And there was no safe place to stop (we were on US 50 at the time). By the time we could stop, we were already soaked, so we just motored through.

Since the last two miles of the journey, from the main road to our house, are on dirt/gravel roads, our bikes now look like this…

Darn Dirty Bikes

The last time we rode, over a month ago, I washed both motorcycles. They looked all nice and shiny then.

Nice Clean Bike

Of course, things could be worse. We could have a very large tree laying on our brand new car. 🙁

Amy's New Car is Under There Somewhere

Poor Amy can’t catch a break here lately. At least her house appears to be okay. We haven’t heard any differently so far anyway.

The MD house is fine. I called our wonderful neighbor, Pete, and asked him to go have a look for me. If he hadn’t, I would’ve worried all day. Now maybe I can go take a nap or something.

No word yet if my brother’s house escaped Irene’s wrath. He and his family left their Chesapeake, VA home in their RV and went to a campground in Louisa, Virginia. If that sounds familiar, it’s because that’s pretty much where the epicenter of last week’s earthquakes happened.

Man, what a crazy week!

Down Time

Hubby and I FINALLY took a much-needed break.

Farnham Colossi

Wednesday evening we headed for the WV place for some R&R. It was wonderful.

On Thursday, I went to visit the Farnham Colossi (follow that link to read all about it on my other blog).

Friday, Hubby and I went for a LONG ride through the VA countryside (230+ miles).

Here I am with a serious case of helmet head.

It was fabulous. The weather was gorgeous, though it did get a bit hot by the end of the day.

My handsome Hubby.

One day soon we’ll have to try for a shot of both of us together.

On Saturday we went to visit our friends Kathy and Barry and we did some off-roading.

My first off-road adventure.

This is their driveway. They’re in the midst of improving the property. It doesn’t look too bad in the picture, but trust me when I say riding my motorcycle up and down that thing AND remaining upright made me quite proud of myself. I never would have attempted that on the cruiser. It’s way rougher than I should have attempted on the GS. But I keep telling myself people ride these things through the Amazon rain forest, I should be able to do a steep, rutted dirt driveway in Maryland for gosh sakes. And I did. 🙂

Seriously, I was amazed I made it to the top without falling. It was like riding a bucking bronco. I knew there was a very good chance of crashing on the way down, i.e., falling over at about 3 mph. A tiny little part of me was thinking I should have one of the guys get my bike back to the bottom, but I quashed that stupid, small voice of reason and went for it. And I survived!

Afterward, we rode into Frostburg and had a nice Mexican dinner at El Canelo.

Yummy Mexican fare in Frostburg.

I really wanted a margarita. Really, really. But alcohol and motorcycles don’t mix. Even when I was young and stupid (I got my motorcycle license at 18), I never so much as sniffed a drink when riding.

Sunday was a homebody day. I actually gave both bikes a much-needed bath. In addition to that off-roading, we’d hit quite a few dirt roads of late. They were both pretty dirty. Then I hacked a path through the trees, something I have wanted to do since forever, so I can walk the dogs without having to duck under a bunch of low-hanging branches.

Today (Monday) we did a short two-hour ride and found some cool new roads. Isn’t it amazing that we can still find roads near here that we’ve never ridden before? I mean, really. We’ve been here for SEVEN years now.

Tomorrow we’ll need to straighten up and then head back to reality. The break was good while it lasted! I hope you’ve enjoyed a nice, long weekend, too!

Quiet Woods

I’ve enjoyed my week here at the WV place. It’s been very quiet. Work has actually been uneventful (no crazy deadlines). I managed to get some stuff done and still enjoy some quiet time with the dogs.

I love walking with the dogs here at the WV place. They REALLY enjoy being able to run, sniff, cavort, roll in stinky stuff, etc. And I just like watching them and observing.

Today I thought I’d give you some random images of things that caught my eye. With little commentary. So you can enjoy your own bit of “quiet.”

What did you see in your world today?

Tuesday Tidbits

Monday in the mountains was relatively uneventful. I worked all day. Actually, I didn’t stop until about 6. Then I fed the girls and took them for their after-dinner stroll. It was a gorgeous day here.

First Daisy of 2011

Look what I found growing in the middle of Turkey Hollow Road! That tells you how much traffic we get back here.

What's happening to my burly tree?

I noticed something odd on my favorite burly tree yesterday. There’s little green things sprouting out of it. I thought maybe it might be a poison ivy/oak-type vine, but these little things appear to be sprouting right out of the bark.

Alien Growth

Here’s something else I noticed. At first glance, it looked like some sort of alien growth. But I think it’s just the last remnants of the flower that appeared before the leaves sprouted. I didn’t notice the bug until I got home and looked at the picture. Do you see the bug? If you click on the picture a larger version will open up so you can get a closer look.

Wanna see the coolest shot of the day?

Are you ready?

Harold

We may not have a fence, but we have a Northern Fence Lizard. Actually, we have several. This one, who I dubbed Harold, lives in or near our block pile. He’s been around for a few years. Either that, or the block pile has been a favorite hangout for other Northern Fence Lizards.

There’s one that lives in the tree right outside our back door, too. When I went out to the truck to grab my phone charger yesterday morning, it was on the ground halfway between the tree and the house just looking at me. It was actually after I saw that one that I decided to check the block pile to see if Harold had returned.

I’d never noticed his blue underparts before.

Of course, me being me, I had to learn more about this lizard (including its name). According to an article I found on the Davidson College web site (thanks to Google), “This common lizard is one of North Carolina’s more conspicuous and familiar reptiles, deriving its common name from an earlier time when wooden fences were more common. Such structures are favored habitats for these quick and agile climbers, which are sometimes referred to by such names as “fence swifts,” “pine swifts” or “wood lizards.” For the full PDF article, CLICK HERE.

Apparently they are pretty common in West Virginia, too.

The girls are bugging the crap out of me ready for their morning walk. So I’d better run. But first, here’s one last look at my pal.

Isn’t he cool?
